Magazine Ransom Note Poem
Poetry is everywhere and can be created from a variety of words that seem disconnected. Your job is to create a thematic poem from random words and phrases from magazines.

Follow these steps:
Ø Flip through magazines and randomly cut out words, headlines, phrases that seem to stand out to you for one reason or another. Gather as many phrases as you can. Start with at least 35 cut-outs in your pile. (Cut-outs, not words. A single word cut out or a multi-word phrase cut out counts as one.) Make sure you're cutting out ONLY words and phrases, NOT pictures. Keep all cut-outs school appropriate. Do not collect anything that could be considered questionable. If you have to wonder if it falls into that "category", discard it.
Ø After you have at least 35 cut-outs, spread out all of your words and phrases. Look for the one word/phrase that jumps out at you the most, whether it be because of the font, size, or words used. This is going to be your title phrase which establishes the theme of your poem.
Ø Gather additional words and phrases to put together meaningful thematic phrases and sentences so that the poem starts to take its form based on the theme you established with the main tagline/title phrase.
Ø Don’t get frustrated at the beginning. Trying to find the words or phrases to start your poem is a little overwhelming because that will set up your theme. Keep playing with the words until they fit. You will probably have to go back to the magazines to cut out words conjunctions or articles (and, a, the, so, etc.)
Ø In piecing your phrases together, if you find that you need a word to make it complete, but you can’t find it in a magazine, ask around to see if someone else has the word you’re looking for. If you still can’t find it, you can cut out individual letters (like a ransom note) to create the word. You can do this for up to 3 different words in the poem.
Ø Don’t forget punctuation!!! Cut it out, too.
Ø Go back to the magazines if you feel you need different phrases to give you a more complete poem.

Once you are completely satisfied, glue or tape everything down.

REQUIREMENTS: Your poem must have a headline title that establishes the theme. You must use at least 20 cut-outs in your poem. You must use punctuation from the magazines, but those don't count towards your cut-out requirements.
